FUTURE PROJECTIONS OF SCINDeA
I. Project Proposal on "HIV / AIDS Awareness Generation and Prevention through Group Specific Interventions"
The spread of HIV continues in many countries of the world over the past few years. It has become a global epidemic and
has been documented that the highest prevalence remains in Sub-Saharan Africa. In several cities of Sub-Saharan Africa, one fourth of young and middle-aged adults are infected with HIV. In 1996 it was estimated that 22.6 million people were living with HIV / AIDS all over the world including 3.1 million newly infected.
In India 3 - 5 million adults are infected with AIDS. However prevalence of HIV is not uniform in India. The prevalence is more in few states and some have low rates of infection. The epidemic is prevalent in Pondicherry and Tamil Nadu in the South and Manipur in the North East. The mode of transmission is generally hetero sexual in nature. In Tamil Nadu it is estimated that 4.5 lakh people are HIV positive cases. Therefore intensive intervention efforts need to be launched in the state to combat the spread of HIV.
Objectives of the proposed proposal :
To reduce the sexual transmission of HIV / AIDS in Tamilnadu as it is the major mode of transmission, accounting for 80% of HIV infection in Tamil Nadu.
To introduce and reinforce safe sexual behaviour in those who are at risk like truckers and women in prostitution.
Identify, educate and counsel cases and their partners about prevention of STD through regular use of condoms and other means.
Condom promotion and correct usage.
To create awareness about Reproductive Tract Infection (RTIs).
To sensitise school teachers and student on HIV / AIDS prevention, care and support.
Programmes :
1. Education and awareness
2. Training
3. Condom promotion
4. Group specific intervention
Likely achievement at the end of the project phase :
a. A Network of NGOs involved in AIDS prevention.
b. Programmes to build the capacity of NGOs to ensure quality intervention.
c. At least a lakh of people will be made aware of STD / HIV / AIDS prevention and care measures.

II. Project Proposal on "Women in Agriculture"
India is predominantly an agricultural country which forms the backbone of the Indian economy. Despite concerted industrialisation in the last four decades, agriculture occupies a place of pride. Being the largest industry in the country, agriculture is the source of livelihood for over 70 percent of population in the country. About 32 percent of the national income is being generated through agriculture. It is estimated that between 75 and 80 percent belong to the Scheduled Castes. The contribution of farm women in agriculture is roughly estimated as 50 to 60 percent in the country.
Women are traditionally known for their skills in the selection and storage if seeds, collection of fuel and fodder, livestock management, organic recycling, etc. A
basic question that arises at this stage is that, technology being disseminated through extension programmes, has it strengthened women. A larger section of women are still unaware of the advanced technologies. The technologies specifically tailored to women have also forgotten the involvement of women in technology development, which has received inadequate attention from the scientific and administrative bodies.
The only way to make the best use of the actual and potential capacities of farm women, who are mostly illiterate, is to enhance their capabilities and sharpen their skills through training. The training will not only improve related operations but also provide them opportunities for self-employment in agro-based enterprises. Training essentially means transfer of technologies for improving their existing knowledge and skills. In most cases, farm women get the new knowledge and skills through male members of the family, mainly because training programmes are not organised for women clientele exclusively. The extension system maintains excellent linkages with male farmers, but no linkages with female farmers.
Objectives :
* To enhance the participation of women in agriculture
* To promote transfer of farm technologies to rural women
* To establish the functional linkages between organisations to promote the case of farm women.
Programmes :
1. Training of women as Trainers in :
* Promotion of sustainable agriculture
* Training in effective crop management
* Training in crop related activities
* Horticulture
* Animal husbandry
2. Education and awareness programmes
At the grass roots level women who have been trained will in turn train other women in farm related activities.
Achievements at the end of the project phase
a. A Network of NGOs involved in promotion of sustainable agriculture
b. A Network of trainers trained in basic concepts of agriculture
c. A minimum of 500 rural and tribal women would have been trained in improved, essential technologies in agriculture.

1. Administration =
Rs. 1,47,500.00

Rs. 13,64,500.00
